Headache IllustrationIntroduction

Headache/Migraine has probably troubled mankind from the dawn of civilization and references to headache are found as far back as 3000BC. Descriptions appear not only in medical texts but also in literary works as diverse as Shakespeare, Lewis Carroll and even Stephen King!

During this time many people have strived to find a cure-all, so far without success. This is not surprising when you consider the varied causes of headache/migraine.

Possible Causes of Headache/Migraine

There are many possible causes of headaches or migraines. The most common are listed below:

  • Muscular tension &/or joint stiffness and dysfunction in the neck and jaw.
  • Dehydration.
  • Unstable blood sugar levels.
  • Hormonal issues
  • Exertion/exercise induced.
  • General systemic illness/fever /infections.
  • Bio-Chemical factors/irritants including:
    • Food allergies/Intolerances
    • Alcohol
    • Drugs and medications (including the contraceptive pill).
  • "My daughters Lisa and Jennifer have both suffered with headaches and stress related issues, without Richard's expertise in osteopathy and his ability to treat their backs, necks and heads, thus giving them the release from their reoccurring headaches and pain, their lives would be far from normal."

  • Mineral/Vitamin deficiencies and imbalances.
  • Emotional/Psychological Stress or Anxiety
  • Uncorrected visual problems.
  • Circulatory/Blood Pressure Abnormalities.
  • Referred pain (e.g. Teeth, sinuses, inner ear)
  • Raised Intra Cranial Pressure.

There may be other causes of head pain, but these are often a combination of one or more of the above, for example, chronic post-traumatic head pain is usually a combination of muscular tension, neck joint irritation and anxiety.

NB. It is worth noting that many people with chronic head pain are fearful they may have a brain tumour. In fact, headache is rarely the main presenting feature of brain tumour

You Are Not Alone!

PieChart of populationMigraine is rated in the top 20 most disabling disorders in the developed world. In the UK it is estimated that at some point in their life upto 78% of the population are affected with chronic/recurrent head pain and up to 18% with migraines. This is one of the most common conditions seen in general practice and yet despite this, very few clinics exist which specialise in helping the sufferers of this debilitating condition. Hence our decision to set up the Cheyham Lodge Headache & Migraine Clinic.
