What is EEG Biofeedback
EEG Biofeedback is essentially a learning strategy for the brain. It is a painless and non-invasive way of teaching the brain to self regulate more effectively, which in turn allows the central nervous system to function efficiently. As such EEG Biofeedback is a comprehensive treatment system that works directly with the brain and by extension can therefore benefit the entire nervous system and body physiology.
How is it done
Each of us has billions of neurons (nerve cells) in our brain. EEG brainwaves are associated with the electric activity of these neurons as they switch on and off over and over again.
This total activity (raw EEG) can be measured by sensors placed on the head. Certain key brainwave frequencies are then monitored and filtered by computer-based apparatus. Sophisticated software then provides audiovisual feedback precisely at the moment when the brainwaves move in a desirable direction.
It is thought that over a period of time the brain can gradually adapt its own electrical activity and learns how to prolong these desirable brainwave patterns. In this way the brain slowly learns how to function in a more stable manner with a resultant reduction in symptoms.
Put simply, the brain is simply relearning how to function as it used to before problems arose.
It is important to stress that this is achieved without ANY external/electrical stimulus being applied to the head or brain at anytime.
